Suicide Prevention Education and the Media
In an effort to reduce contagion and the number of suicides that occur as a result of how these deaths are reported in the media or portrayed in entertainment, Yellow Ribbon has made it a goal to try to improve reporting and portrayals of suicidal behavior, mental illness, and addictions in the entertainment and news media.

We are working with media professionals and media associations to educate reporters on appropriate reporting on mental illness and suicide using their knowledge as well as the AFSP's (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) media recommendations for reporting on suicide and mental health issues.

From the AFSP's media recommendations, we have created a power point presentation for media professionals, as well as a "Toolkit for Media Journalists".

Working together in our communities to strike a delicate balance between the right to know, the freedom of speech and expression and the safety of all, we can help save and enrich lives, making our communities better for everyone.

Toolkit for Media Journalists
Yellow Ribbon has created a toolkit for media journalists to use when reporting on suicide. The CD toolkit includes cut and paste call-out boxes (easily formattable for use with their story), the AFSP media recommendatons, suggestions for stories/angles, and an expert contact list for media professionals to utilize.

If you would like a CD of our media toolkit, please contact us. We have also given you access to several of our media pieces below. You have access to several pieces of our media toolkit, including a link you can click on that will take your directly to the AFSP media recommendations.
