Community Educators will learn best practices in educating adults and youth on mental health and suicide prevention including teaching symptoms of depression, warning signs for suicide and associated risk factors. Community Educators will also learn to promote the messages:
  • Mental health promotion is closely connected to suicide prevention
  • Depression, the most common mental illness, is a treatable, physical illness of the brain
  • You don’t have to be a counselor or to do it by yourself – You can be a link to help
  • If you know someone is thinking about suicide, it is not a time to keep a secret
  • What to do if you are worried someone may be in crisis



Additionally, Community Educators will gain the following skills:
  • Know the guidelines for safe presentations to adults and youth
  • Understand the importance of having community and mental health support persons at presentations
  • Respond to audience members and link them to appropriate resources
  • Gather evaluation forms and report details of presentations held
  • Important differences between educating adults and educating youth on suicide prevention
